After a company sculptor gave his wife a cast-resin ball-jointed doll he had made, Volks turned the idea into a product, putting the first Super Dollfie on sale on February 28, 1999. The resin dolls are strung with internal elastic, fully customizable from faceup to wig to wardrobe, and they effectively founded the modern Asian ball-jointed-doll hobby. Owners treat an SD less as a figure than as a long-term companion to dress and remake.
