One of Japan's largest manga and book publishers, founded August 8, 1922 by Takeo Ōga in Tokyo. Forms the Hitotsubashi Group together with Shueisha (which Shogakukan founded) and Hakusensha (which Shueisha founded in turn). Major manga IP catalog includes Doraemon (serialized December 1969; tankōbon 1974-1996, 45 volumes, 300 million+ copies sold as of 2024), Detective Conan / Case Closed (serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday since January 1994), InuYasha, Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Touch, and the Pokemon manga adaptations. Headquartered at 2-3-1 Hitotsubashi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, near the Jimbocho book district. Masahiro Ōga (grandson of founder Takeo Ōga) is current President. For figures, Shogakukan operates primarily as IP licensor for partner-manufacturer figure work; direct figure production under the Shogakukan name is limited to Shogakukan-store exclusives and tie-in releases.
