Japan
A historically significant Japanese toy company. Marusan was founded in 1947 in Tokyo by three relatives — Haruyasu Ishida, Minoru Ishida, and Yasuo Arai — and incorporated as Marusan Shoten Ltd. in 1950. The company is known as the first Japanese plastic model manufacturer and for releasing the first Godzilla soft-vinyl ("sofubi") kaiju figure in 1966. After bankruptcy in 1968, Minoru Ishida rebuilt the company in 1969 as Marusan Co., Ltd. The current operation, led by Eiji Kaminaga since 2003, reissued the original 1960s vinyl monsters in 1997 and continues to produce sofubi kaiju figures in the historical tradition.
