High Grade arrived in 1990 for Gunpla's tenth anniversary as the 1/144 line meant to be the sensible default: snap-fit, color-separated straight from the runner, and buildable without paint or glue. The 1999 Universal Century relaunch turned it into the deep catalog it is now, the grade most builders start with and most return to for its balance of size and approachable detail.
